The formula

Net margin = Net profit ÷ Sale price. Because commission is charged on the sale price, the price that yields a target margin is solved as: Price = (Cost + Shipping + Other) ÷ (1 − Commission% − TargetMargin%).

Frequently asked questions

Markup is profit as a percentage of cost; margin is profit as a percentage of the sale price. A 50% markup equals a 33% margin. Mixing them is the most common pricing mistake.

Put your cost and all costs (commission, shipping) into the equation and solve for the price that yields the desired margin. Because commission depends on the price, the calculation is circular — this tool solves it for you.

There is no single answer, but net margin is generally not advised to drop below 15%. High-volume items run lower (10-15%); niche or branded products can reach 30-50%.
